2026 SLSA Trap and Skeet Memorial Shoot

After a fifteen-year hiatus the Memorial shoot has returned to the trap fields of SLSA. This is a long-standing shoot at the club that was started in the late 1960’s. It consists of 50 16-yard targets and 50 handicap targets, but unlike normal ATA shoots the handicap is determined by the 16-yard score, and puts a slight twist on things.

This first year back was not to disappoint with a four-way tie for the High gun buckle. Eathan Prescott a young accomplished shooter was unable to make the call for the shoot-off before having to go to work, and is learning the ways of adulthood.

Taking the line for the coveted title of Memorial shoot high-gun was, Jaxon Brennen(2025 Ca. state handicap champion), Brandon Simonds, and yours truly. After 10 shots from the 16-yard line Jaxon and Brandon were down one each and I left 3 zeros on the score sheet. After 10 more shots from handicap Brandon Simonds emerged Memorial shoot champion besting Jaxon by one, and collecting the belt buckle, his name on the perpetual trophy, and his spot in SLSA history.

In conjunction with the trap shoot we threw some skeet targets for our loyal shooters of the high and low houses. This contest too would end in a tie and shoot-off between Bill Garret and Dan Callery, and after heated doubles shooting from stations 3,4,5 Dan would walk off the victor.

Once again, I would like to thank Rory Conger, Butch Phillips, and Marilyn Phillips for cooking a belly filling lunch and the lady behind the scenes helping me out with flyers, award certificates and cooking the triple chocolate cake, the love of my life Sheila Thorp.

Thanks also to Ed Merrit, Brian Wiess, Morgan Phillips, and Dustin Knutson for keeping their eyes open with scorekeeping duties.

See you at the next shoot, The Spring Classic on Saturday April 11th .

Remember head down and eye on the target

New Years 50 50 50

Starting off the New Year with our first trap club shoot on January, 25th, we had 16 shooters and the event went very smooth and was well received. Everybody had a good time and a fantastic lunch was prepared by Rory Conger & Butch Phillips. We had a long-time trap shooter but new member to SLSA Mike Martines take the HOA prize. Good shooting Mike!

Young Zane Blake took Junior honors, just edging out Wade Knutson.

Barbara Thorp coming out of trapshooting retirement took the Lady’s Crown, and goes to show you may stop trapshooting for a while but can never completely give it up. Great job Barbie.

Keith Baker took Veteran Gold after a heated contest with Butch Phillips. These guys may have a few years on them but  can still point a shotgun better than a lot of us younger guys.

Award Winners:

  • High 16 Yard: Butch Phillps
  • High 19-21 Yard: Jason Pambrun
  • High 22-24 Yard: Barbara Thorp
  • High 25-27 Yard: Pat Thorp
  • High Doubles: Brandon Simonds

I want to give a big thank you to Rory Conger and Butch Phillips for preparing and serving up a great tri-tip lunch, Ed Merrit and Brian Wiess for spending the day on the scorekeeping stand, and Dustin Knutson for help cleaning up.

If all goes as planned, we will have many more of these club shoots, if you are a seasoned veteran of trapshooting or first year rookie, these club shoots are a great way to hone your competition skills, so come out and shoot some targets, have a great lunch, and meet some other great  folks that have a vein for gun powder and clay target dust.

We would love to see you at our next shoot.

Remember head down and eye on the target.
